ABOUT THE IMAGE: Tex (Fred) Avery bought the “I” to irreverent when it came to cartoons. His Golden Age Bugs and Elmer characters involved personalities that played off one another through pratfalls and jokes unseen in contemporary humor, though they nonetheless are as funny today as when first seen. The Avery-style of his animation as well helped to instill this irreverence. Bugs and Elmer, for instance, had a much different look, as both came across more cartoon-like and smart-aleck-like than when in the hands of other directors. Simply put, when Bugs and Elmer were paired up, Bugs was the pest and Elmer the one who was pestered. But it was how Elmer was pestered by Bugs, via tricks, caricatures and double entendres that truly defined Avery.

In the image shown is a classic standoff between two classic animation stars: Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd. It comes from the Avery-directed 1940 short “A Wild Hare.” This cartoon is said to have solidified the personalities of Bugs and Elmer, and laid the groundwork for future meetings between the two characters.

ABOUT THE MEDIUM:  After selection of an image from a Tex Avery cartoon, noted director Darrell Van Citters recreates the animation from the original film. The background is digitally recreated from the original film. It is then reproduced as a fine art Giclée print. The master inking was made by Laurie Dindis, and silk-screened onto acetate along with the Clampett Studio Collection seal of authenticity. Each cel was expertly hand-painted on the reverse side in the classic animation style.
